Here is a little something from CES 2014 that will satisfy the James Bond within us all. FLIR,
which would normally sell its thermal imaging technology to the
military, has been able to shrink the tech so that it fits into an
iPhone 5 case – turning your phone in to a thermal imaging camera.
The FLIR thermal imaging smartphone case will be available only for the iPhone 5 and 5S initially. It has a built-in battery, which powers the two cameras for up to two hours. When you’re not searching for something in the dark, the battery can also be used to charge your phone.
The case has two cameras because one generates the thermal image, while the second one is a standard camera lens, which the FLIR app uses to generate and overlay outlines, making it easier to recognize humans, objects and text. It has been designed so that regular consumers can tell what they are looking at, rather than just red and orange blobs.
The case will cost $350 and should be available by late spring or early summer this year. The company has also said that it is working on a version for Android too, that will support the popular handsets of that market.
